E.J. Eldridge - A Pair of Fine 1842 Watercolours, Portrait of a Lady and a Boy
A very fine pair of early 19th Century watercolour portraits by the artist E.J. Eldridge, depicting both a portrait of a lady in a black dress with white lace accoutrements in an interior, and a young boy in his school uniform, depicted in a classical garden building.
The artist has employed a carefully layered and precise technique, with a clear emphasis on detail and accuracy of form. The structured settings and backgrounds of both portraits contrast well with the softer lines and features of each figure. This device used by Eldridge brings about a sense of endearment for the subject in the viewer, despite the formality of the overall composition.
Both works are signed and handsomely framed in original 19th Century polished dark wood veneer frames, as shown. The portrait of the lady is dated 1841, and the boy 1842, in graphite to the lower right corners.Signed and dated. On wove.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. There is some debris trapped behind the glazing, and both pictures have some creasing and surface abrasion. There is some staining to the upper edge of the portrait of the young boy. The frames are both in good condition, with some minor losses to the corners and surface marks commensurate with their age.
