B. Youngday - Fine 1958 Oil, Portrait of an Unknown Gentleman

Item Sold

A very fine portrait in oil by the artist B. Youngday, depicting an older gentleman wearing a tie, red jumper and an overcoat. The sitter looks squarely forward towards the viewer, with a somewhat arresting and endearing charm.

Using both layered brushstrokes and palette work, the artist has achieved an outstanding sense of both depth and character. The dark background focuses the viewer's attention on the subject, and his slightly dishevelled manner. With clear influences from the traditional school of Victorian portraiture, there is a balance here, between realism and impressionistic detail.

Inscribed to the reverse 'B. Youngday, 33 park View, W3. 1958. Examination No. 060/2338'. On canvas laid to board.

Signed, dated and incribed on the reverse.

In good condition overall. There is a loss to the paint and canvas to the right edge, near the centre, as can be seen in the images provided.

50 x 33.1cm (19.7" x 13")
