Description

A wonderful early 20th century landscape depicting an idyllic English landscape by the artist Arthur Henry Jenkins (1871-1940). The bright colour palette and impressionist tone have been wonderfully executed by the artist, with thick brushstrokes and areas of impasto. Jenkins has clearly been inspired by the French impressionist Claude Monet, and his series of works focusing on the subject of Haystacks. The principal subject of each painting in the series is stacks of harvested wheat, with Monet studying and experimenting with light and tone. Jenkins nods to this by including the haystack to the left of the composition, which is bathed in bright sunlight. The artist has exquisitely captured the warm and calm atmosphere of mid afternoon; while the viewer is able trace Jenkin's movement and thought process through the quick and light brush strokes, which are visible in the visceral oil paint. Inscribed on the reverse with the location 'Wiltshire Downs'. Framed in a thick wooden frame with material slip. Signed. On board.

Condition

The frame has a few minor marks and a split measuring 4cm to the lower left area, just below the material slip. Minor loss to the upper left corner of the frame. Areas of surface dirt. Inspection under UV light does reveal some areas of minor over painting to the sky and left corner. These are minor areas where a restorer has probably touched up sections of paint loss. The restoration has been completed to a high standard. The back of the board has been scored with a knife, however this has not affected the painting in any way.
