A.N. Blackman - Signed and Framed 1974 Oil, The Seagulls

Item Sold

A charming beach scene by listed marine British artist A.N. Blackman. The more impressionistic quality of this coastal study deviates from Blackman's normative depictions of naval ships. The expressive horizontal brushstrokes express the dynamism and strength in the outstretched wingspan of the seagulls. Well presented in a wood effect cream frame with a woven insert. Inscribed 'Seagulls - Mudflats on the North Kent Marshes, A.N. Blackburn a well known local artist was head of the Gravesend School of Art'. Signed and dated. On canvas.

There are a few scuffs to the edges of the frame. Overall the appearance is very good.

Framed Size: 84 x 58.4cm (33.1" x 23")

Artist Biography

Anthony Blackman's interest in Maritime painting was influenced by observing life on the River Thames off his home-town of Gravesend. The river life was fascinating to him and at an early age he was sketching ships and local river scenes. He spent his early student days at Gravesend School of Art later specialising in Marine Painting. Anthony went on to attend the Royal College of Art, London from 1954-57.
